Highland Environmental Organisations

We are gathering information about all of the businesses, groups and organisations in Sutherland and nearby who are working on improving the environment or improving our predicament with regards to global warming.

This may be the main area of work or only one aspect. This is not just a directory listing though. Here we are aiming to build a collaborative network where we all help each other achieve our goals of helping the planet.

Please fill in our questionnaire here to get your listing included here and hopefully join our collaborative ventures.

The Organisations are listed in alphabetical order.

Assynt Development Trust

Our environmental/climate work began when we hosted a Climate Conversation as part of the Scottish Government’s consultation regarding climate change. Since then, some of the group have reached out to other groups, such as Planet Sutherland, to share information and gather advice. We are particularly keen tackle the problem of marine litter and hope to work with Lochinver Harbour ( and Highland Harbours) to bring about positive change. Lochinver Harbour is a Kimo harbour and is involved in the ‘Fishing For Litter’ innovation. We hope to help reduce the amount of waste materials ending up in the sea and increase the level of sorting and recycling of waste when it is landed at Lochinver.
We are also working towards supporting our community to make their homes and lifestyles more energy efficient and sustainable.

(The) Hirsel, Ardgay

Our traditional farm raises and markets livestock and crops, all being carried out as near to organically as possible (all the practices, none of the paperwork!). We are using many techniques that are now called ‘regenerative’ farming – proactively contributing to the environment. In 2021, we plan to begin inviting the public to the farm, to share our journey through educational and cultural activities.

Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust

We are a local charitable trust that has been serving the communities of Ardgay and District and Creich since 2011. The Trust area covers 680 square miles, with a population of 1,700.

The area has been identified as fragile and disadvantaged due to lack of well-paid employment opportunities, an ageing population, limited transport networks, and poor housing stock. Over 60% of households in the area have been identified as being fuel poor and/or living in poverty. KoSDT strive to increase the economic, environmental, and social health of the community to ensure that the area has increased resilience in the future.
